Bank of Thailand Regulations on currency exchange and international funds transfer for the purpose of study
If you would like to exchange or transfer funds for educational purpose, you must present your documents to the bank in compliance with the following rules of the Bank of Thailand:

 

  • Buying foreign currency: present passport, a copy of I-20 or certificate of enrollment or acceptance letter. 
  • Tuition fee and other personal payment: present a copy of I-20 form or the certificate of enrollment or an invoice from the overseas university.
  • Buying accommodation: Parents can transfer a maximum of US $5,000,000 or its equivalent per person per year to buy a house, condominium or other abode abroad on the condition that they can state reason and necessity, and the details of the property. If the amount exceeds the limit granted, you must ask for the permission from the Bank of Thailand in advance.
  • Buying a car: If you intend to purchase foreign currency or transfer funds to purchase a car, you must ask for the permission from the Bank of Thailand.
