Foreign Currency Banknotes


Advantages

Traveler’s cheques and drafts


1. A traveler’s cheque
can be used almost like cash. The holder should immediately sign the cheques upon purchase in the presence of the sales agent. When using a traveler’s cheque, you must always sign the cheque again in the presence of the payee or bank clerk, and show your passport or other form of identification.

Fee: 1% of the amount plus 3 Bt for duty stamp per cheque.

Advantages

  • No expiry date.
  • Convenient, highly secure. In case of loss, you can report loss by contacting the local traveler’s cheques agency, such as American Express.
  • Better exchange rate than buying foreign banknotes.

Remark 

  • Fee applicable.

Advice: You should countersign the cheque only upon using it, in case of loss or theft.

2. A Bank draft is a payment order from a bank which instructs a drawee bank in another country to pay the payee whose name is indicated on the draft. The buyer can carry a draft with him/her while traveling or send to a payee via mail.

Fees:

  • 203Bt per draft for USD, AUD, and NZD.
  • 353Bt per draft for GBP and EUR.

Advantages

  • Highly secure, because only the person whose name is on the draft is entitled to receive the money. In event of loss, you can contact the bank to cancel the draft, ask for a refund or request the bank to issue a new draft.
  • Better exchange rate than buying foreign banknotes.
  • Inexpensive fee.

Remarks 

  • The payee cannot immediately use the money, but has to open an account and deposit drafts in a foreign bank while the bank collects the proceeds from the drawee bank; this may take 5-15 days.
  • When sending a draft via the postal service, the sender must pay a delivery fee, and risk delay or loss of the draft.

International Funds Transfer


The bank transfers funds as instructed by the sender to a beneficiary / receiver living abroad through SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication). To process, the beneficiary / receiver must specify his or her account name, number and address, including beneficiary bank's name and address. 

Fee:

  • 400Bt per transaction.

Advantages

  • Fast and safe.
  • Better exchange rate than buying foreign banknotes.
  • Payee should normally receive funds within 1-2 days. 

Remark 

  • The beneficiary / receiver may not receive the full amount of money as a bank fee may be normally deducted.

ATM Card


You can withdraw the money abroad using Bangkok Bank’s ATM cards from any ATM machine with the PLUS or Visa Electron logos. The bank will deduct money from your account in Thailand by calculating the exchange rate on the processing date. The Bangkok Bank ATM cards that can be used overseas are:

1. Bualuang Premier
: You can withdraw money up to 150,000Bt per day at any ATM with the PLUS sign and increase the maximum withdrawal amount to up to 500,000Bt per day through Bualuang phone service at 1333 or (66)0-2645-5555.

2. Be1st card
: You can withdraw up to 150,000Bt per day at any ATM displaying the Visa Electron or PLUS sign, and increase the maximum withdrawal amount up to 500,000Bt per day through Bualuang Phone service at 1333 or (66)0-2645-5555. In addition, Be1st card can also be a debit card for paying your bills.

Annual Fee:

  • Bualuang Premier: 150Bt (Membership fee) and 75Bt per withdrawal transaction.
  • Be1st: 200Bt (Membership fee) and 100Bt per withdrawal transaction.

Advantages

  • Withdraw cash instantly.

Remarks 

  • You can withdraw money only from ATMs with the PLUS sign.
  • As there is a limit to the withdrawal amounts through ATM machines abroad and withdrawal fee is collected per transaction. If you want to withdraw a large sum of money, you may have to make several transactions which cost a large fee.
  • If an ATM machine is out of order, the card is defected and cannot be used.
  • Foreign exchange rates are not given in advance.

Advice:

  • Please make sure that you understand terms and conditions of ATM usage thoroughly.
  • Do not withdraw your funds exceeding the machine limit.
  • Do not keep your personal identification number (PIN) together with your ATM card or disclose your PIN to anyone.

Credit Card


When traveling abroad, you can use only the credit cards accepted internationally such as VISA, Master Card or American Express. Students can apply for the supplementary card of their parents. Apart from making payment, you can use credit card to withdraw cash advance overseas. Bangkok Bank’s credit cards which you can use abroad are:

  • Classic card: to withdraw cash advance at the maximum of 30,000 Bt per day from ATM machine.
  • Gold card: to withdraw cash advance at the maximum of 50,000 Bt per day from ATM machine.

Credit Card Fees: (main and supplementary cards)

Bangkok Bank will waive joining fees and annual fees in the first year for all types of credit cards.The annual fee for the following year will be also exempted if cardholders have spent at least 5,000 Bt in the previous year. Annual fees for different types of cards are as follows.  

  • Visa and Master Card Classic card: 600 Bt.
  • Bangkok Bank American Express card: 750 Bt.
  • Visa and Master Card Gold card: 1,100 Bt.
  • Bangkok Bank American Express Gold card: 1,250 Bt.

Cash Advance Fee: 3% of the withdrawn amount.

Advantages

  • Easy to carry.
  • Make payment and withdraw cash instantly.

Remark 

  • You will have to pay a cash advance fee and at the time of withdrawal the foreign exchange rate will not be shown.

Advice:

  • Do not keep your personal identification number (PIN) together with your credit card or disclose your PIN to anyone.
  • Please check your credit limit before performing a transaction.
