Bangkok Bank is calling for new and regular donors as it enters the last 3 months of the “800,000 cc x2” blood donation project by inviting its business partners, customers and general public to be “givers” to help fill the shortage in blood reserves for Thai Red Cross Society. This reflects the Bank’s role as a “trusted partner and reliable close friend” that has stood alongside Thai society for 80 years.
Bangkok Bank Executive Vice President, Consumer Banking Ms. Pochanee Kongkalai said that, as a leading regional bank, the Bank understands the importance of having sufficient blood reserves to help fellow human beings. This has inspired the “8 million cc for 80 years of Bangkok Bank” project to increase the blood reserves for the National Blood Center of the Thai Red Cross Society to 8 million cc. After the goal was reached in February 2024 it was expanded into the “800,000 cc x2”project by enlisting the cooperation of partner organizations, the Bank’s executives and employees, and general public. To date, the total blood donations have exceeded 12 million cc. (12,003,200 cc. as of August 14, 2024) from a total of 30,008 donors.
The project received an excellent response from business partners, customers and general public. It quickly exceeded its initial target, successfully enlisting 26,158 new blood donors, accounting for 87.17% of all donors. This is likely to lead to more regular donations and existing donors also showed an interest in donating more regularly.
“Despite the large number of blood donors involved in this project, blood reserves are still insufficient to meet the demand. Over the next 3-4 months before Bangkok Bank’s 80th anniversary on December 1, 2024 which marks the completion of the project, and, as a “trusted partner and reliable close friend” standing alongside Thai society for a long time, Bangkok Bank invites organizations to provide space for mobile blood donation units where their employees and people nearby can donate blood. The general public can also participate in the project by donating blood at available service points to collectively achieve the target of 8 million cc x 2 or 16 million cc and become givers,” said Ms. Pochanee
Miss Piyanan Kumkrong, Assistant Director of Blood Procurement and Corporate Image of the National Blood Center, Thai Red Cross Society said the need for blood reserves in July this year was more than 200,000 units. In the past, hospitals around the country requested a daily average of 7,200 units of blood but the National Blood Center was only able to provide 3,500 units, or only 48.61% of that needed.
In the past, The National Blood Center regularly campaigned and invited the general public to donate blood as well as proactively reaching out to quality and targeted donor groups such as voluntary blood donors, youth, women and those with rare blood types. Moreover, the Center provided knowledge about blood donation via its website and social media and worked with the government and private sector to create projects and boost blood donation throughout the year such as the recent collaboration with Bangkok Bank under the “8 million cc for 80 years of Bangkok Bank” project. Blood donors were invited to donate blood every 3 months, or 4 times a year, to consistently maintain blood reserves, enough to meet the needs of hospitals around the country.
This year, Bangkok Bank organized the “8 million cc for 80 years of Bangkok Bank” project, which has effectively encouraged public participation in various activities. This initiative has led to an increase in blood reserves, with a significant number of new donors. Meanwhile, the Thai Red Cross Society has been sending thank you messages and reminders to donors when it’s time for their next donation and is continually inviting the public to participate. These efforts contribute to the long-term sustainability of blood reserves. Healthy individuals are encouraged to donate blood regularly every 3 months to ensure sufficient stock is available to provide prompt assist to patients nationwide.
