Bangkok Bank announced a waste management goal of achieving Zero Waste to Landfill in 2025 at its Rama 3 building by implementing comprehensive waste management measures tackling upstream to downstream waste. It promotes awareness and engagement of executives and staff through the Bualuang Save the Earth: 3R+ project under which the Bank partners with Better World Green to implement ‘Send Waste Home’ project aimed at tackling orphan waste. The model is expected to be replicated at all Bangkok Bank office buildings while strengthening its position as a leading regional financial institution which grows sustainably.
Bangkok Bank Senior Executive Vice President and Corporate Secretary Kobsak Pootrakool said the Bank has implemented the Bualuang Save the Earth: 3R+ (reduce reuse recycle plus) project to drive efficient use of resources and effective internal waste management with a goal to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill for its Rama 3 building within 2025. A comprehensive and effective waste management approach will be strictly adopted.
With this approach, the Bank tackles upstream waste by encouraging responsible behavior of all employees and everyone entering the Rama 3 building to reduce waste, particularly single-use plastics which account for more than 98% of total waste. To encourage employees to separate waste at the source, the Bank has installed categorized waste containers on every floor of the building. Moreover, nearly 100% of the office space has gotten rid of personal waste bins while the Bank also procures eco-friendly products and materials.
The Bank tackles midstream waste by asking the housecleaning staff to sort waste at the endpoint to ensure sorting is done correctly and completely. The Bank provides sufficient space to effectively sort waste to ensure proper collection and storage before being disposed of correctly.
Lastly, downstream waste focuses on proper disposal of each type of waste, such as food waste which can be recycled into soil conditioner. The Bank has recently installed food waste processors at the canteens of Bangkok Bank Silom Head Office building and the Rama 3 building. The processors have a system which turns food waste into soil conditioner which can reduce the amount sent to landfills by up to 100 kilograms a day. This amount is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 33.3 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kgCO2eq) per day or 12.15 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2eq) per year when compared to going to landfills.
“Apart from systematically adopting comprehensive operational plans connecting upstream to downstream waste, the Bank has developed a communications plan to provide knowledge and promote activities among employees and other users in the building to drive the engagement and success of the project. Meanwhile, the Bank is supported by the ‘Send Waste Home’ project of Better World Green which has expertise in waste treatment and disposal to transform orphan waste into solid recovered fuel. Going forward, the Bank plans to replicate the project in its Silom Head Office building and at nationwide branches to achieve the common goal of Zero Waste to Landfill. The Bualuang Save the Earth: 3R+ project is another initiative which Bangkok Bank, as a leading regional bank, has initiated to create value for a sustainable future of the Thai society throughout its 80 years,” said Mr. Kobsak.
Better World Green (BWG) Deputy Managing Director of Operations Division Pornpen Paoratchatapiboon said Better World Green Group, as the only leading Thai provider of industrial waste management and disposal certified to international standards, is pleased to join Bangkok Bank on a common mission to tackle waste management problems in a tangible manner. We have installed ‘Send Waste Home’ drop-off boxes around Bangkok Bank’s Rama 3 building to receive orphan waste such as scrap paper, rubber, fabric, leather and plastics or unwanted items and transform them into renewable energy for generating electricity.
The Better World Green Group is committed to conserving the environment while focusing on raising awareness and encouraging behavioral change through socially responsible activities. The Group aims to collaborate with businesses wishing to manage waste effectively while promoting knowledge of waste sorting on a daily basis to reduce landfill waste and recycling it for optimal use in line with the bio-circular-green economy. At present, the Send Waste Home project has reduced 1,628.89 tons of landfill waste (information as recorded from January 1, 2022 – May 31, 2024),” said Mrs. Pornpen.
The Bualuang Save the Earth: 3R+ project and the goal to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill at the Rama 3 building are a part of the activities under the Bualuang Save the Earth project. The Bank organizes internal and external environmental activities such as the Bualuang Green Team project which engages employees to be champions in driving environmental and resource conservation, the Bualuang Save the Earth: Rak Tha Chin project (a five-year project from 2023-2027) which combines effort to manage marine debris at estuaries between local government agencies and local communities in Samut Sakhon province. The project has installed litter traps in the pilot areas of Khlong Luang Sahakon and Khlong Pittayalongkorn, Khok Kham Subdistrict to reduce more than 148 tons of litter a year flowing to Tha Chin River and the Gulf of Thailand while preparing to set up a community waste bank to create value for waste, reduce waste, and solve waste problems in a sustainable manner.
