Online shopping is becoming more and more popular because of its convenience and speed, especially with the younger generation. While the easiest way to pay for goods is with a credit card, many people are concerned about security and afraid to use them for online payments. Shopping lovers don’t need to despair though as there is a solution. Let’s see how it works.
Check before spending
Firstly, you should study the reliability of the online shopping website. If the website begins with “https”, it is more secure than websites that start with “http”. Secondly, whenever you are shopping online, check the authenticity of a merchant such as the name of the website and shop because not every website is reliable. The simplest way to check is to google it; see whether the shop is definitely selling goods, if the shop’s customers have received goods after they have paid for them, and review the customers’ comments. For your own peace of mind, you can also search for an e-commerce registration of the shop on the websites of the Department of Business Development or the Ministry of Commerce. If the shop is registered, you can be more confident about its reliability.
Register the card
You can register for Verified by Visa or Mastercard Secure Code which will ensure security when shopping online. For Visa or Mastercard credit card holders, the system will ensure that only you can access the details of transaction information and authorize transactions by sending you an SMS with an OTP that allows you to verify and authorize transactions. During the payment process, you also need to check whether the Personal Assurance Message (for Visa card holders) or Personal Greeting (for Mastercard card holders) perfectly matches the message set up when you registered. If not, you should cancel the transaction immediately because a merchant may not be guaranteed for a Visa or Mastercard card, and this might cause some difficulties if you want to challenge a payment.
Use a One Time Password
Currently, some banks provide credit card services which can secure your online shopping with a credit or debit card. For instance, under Bangkok Bank’s iPay service, a One Time Password (OTP) will be sent to your phone. You need to use the OTP to verify and authorize transactions every time you make a payment. This service is available for merchants that are guaranteed by Visa or Mastercard cards only.
To take advantage of the convenience of online shopping, you may sometimes try to bypass such security measures. However, if you strictly follow the guideline above, you can be confident you can shop online securely.
